I first contacted Ibizan Hound Rescue around 2008 hoping to adopt a beezer. While there are sadly tons of Ibizans (Podenco Ibicenco) and other breeds in the Podenco family in shelters in their native country of Spain, North American born Ibizans are rare. You may recall that we adopted Argos, our Galgo, from Spain in 2008. They have a very similar situation to Podencos. It is a really wonderful thing that Ibizans in North America rarely need rescue. We have small numbers and a tight community so we don't typically have issues with dogs turning up in need. This can make it hard for people with a "rescue only" philosophy to ever get one without having to adopt from overseas but I'm proud that my breed is preserved responsibly and is not a burden on the shelter system and rescues in North America.

Every so often a case comes up though and rescue is needed. I finally got my first rescue Ibizan in December 2015. I remember being contacted by a wonderful lady that I had met years before and knew online. There was an Ibizan in a shelter and she knew I had the breed. Admittedly, I was skeptical. At least 99% of the time an "Ibizan" in a US shelter is some type of bully mix with prick ears. She sent me a picture and I realized that she really was an Ibizan! I contacted our rescue chair and the wheels were in motion.

Trillian came from a kennel situation with several others and she had to remain a secret until all of them were rescued. She had a different name then. She actually moved in with us before Aziza was born, although Zz was older by time we were allowed to share her. In the end, 9 Ibizans were saved over the course of 3 years. That is a ton for us to have in rescue in America! It was a complicated situation and difficult for the people and dogs involved, as well as financially draining for our breed club rescue (who could not openly raise funds since the situation was under wraps).

Trillian was a spooky, unsocialized creature. She knew kennel life and very few people. It has taken her a very long time to get comfortable with strangers. Luckily for her, we have a lot of experience working with spooky, shy, or unsocialized hounds. Much like my heart dog, Timmy, she bonded with me quickly and after some time she made Justin her “emergency backup human”. She has grown and blossomed a lot over the years but still has moments where she gets scared. She is an incredibly snuggly, sweet, affectionate dog, which saves her because she is also a very naughty, mischievous dog. We tell her it is a good thing that she is so cute! We adore her though and are so grateful to have finally welcomed our rescue Ibizan after 7 years of searching in the USA.

Here are some photos from her early days with us.
